Running Your Honesty Box
Restocking, freshness, records, feedback and range growth
Last reviewed:
Customers return for reliability. A small box stocked, cleaned and recorded consistently will usually outperform a bigger range that is frequently stale, confusing or unavailable.
Restocking
Use a standard route and a recorded trigger.
- Check safety, access, power and weather before opening.
- Remove waste, damaged packs and out-of-date stock.
- Clean the display and payment touchpoints using suitable controls.
- Count opening stock by product and batch.
- Add new stock behind or below older stock without mixing identities.
- Photograph the final display where useful and record the restock time.
Keeping products fresh
Match batch size and checks to the product and weather.
- Set product-specific temperature, humidity, light and maximum-display rules.
- Use smaller batches during hot, wet or low-demand periods.
- Keep a thermometer and alarm/check system where temperature control matters.
- Protect stock from direct sun, frost, pests, road splash and condensation.
- Use an internal pull date earlier than the customer-facing date where needed.
- Document and dispose of compromised stock; do not quietly return it to sale.
Record keeping
Keep the minimum records that let you explain every product and every euro or pound.
| Record | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Supplier/harvest/production | Traceability and recall. |
| Batch, date and quantity | Rotation and affected-stock identification. |
| Temperature/condition checks | Evidence that storage controls operated. |
| Stock, waste and sales | Margin, theft and demand decisions. |
| Cleaning and maintenance | Hygiene and safe premises. |
| Complaint/correction action | Customer safety and continuous improvement. |
Customer feedback
Collect specific feedback without collecting unnecessary personal data.
- Use one QR code to a short form or a dedicated contact number/email.
- Ask about availability, freshness, access, payment and desired products.
- Separate compliments from action-worthy patterns.
- Respond privately to payment errors or complaints.
- Record allergen, illness, injury, foreign-body or product-safety reports immediately and escalate through the recall/authority procedure.
Expanding your range
Treat every new category as a small launch.
- Prove unmet demand with stock-outs, requests or a short preorder/test.
- Calculate the true unit cost and display capacity.
- Check registration, approval, food/product safety, allergen, label, insurance and storage implications.
- Create the supplier/batch/payment code before stocking.
- Launch a small quantity for a fixed review period.
- Keep, change or remove it using margin, waste and customer evidence.
